Italian Design Day 2018 – seminar with Artemest, the online platform for high end artisan products

28th February 2018

On the occasion of Italian Design Day (IDD), now at its second edition, the Embassy of Italy in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute and the Italian Trade Agency is organising a series of events celebrating Italian deisgn.

The second edition of Italian Design Day opened yesterday in London, co-organised by the Embassy of Italy and Artemest, an online distribution platform for high-end Italian artisanal products. The aim of the event was to examine the opportunities that e-commerce and new distributive models present for producers of niche goods, and it focused on the combination of innovation, quality, beauty, tradition and know-how in the Italian artisanal sector. The event was attended by architects, designers and investors.

The opening address by the ambassador, Raffaele Trombetta, and a presentation by Marco Credendino, the director of Artemest, were followed by a discussion between Ippolita Rostagno, the co-founder of Artemest, and Marco Della Femina, an architect, moderated by Emma O’Kelly, the editor-at-large for Wallpaper* magazine.

The discussion and the Q&A session that followed it highlighted some of the trends that are currently shaping the world of design, such as growing demand for customisation – “a piece of art only you can have”, as Rostagno described it. The speakers also discussed the added value of Artemest’s model, which puts customers in direct contact with small-scale artisan producers who would otherwise find it hard to access international markets due to the more limited size of the markets and the fact that the producers are less familiar with the processes of internationalisation.

The ambassador pointed out that this business model seamlessly combines modern instruments, such as online platforms, with the ancient Italian artisanal know-how. In doing so, it preserves the traditional value of these high-end products while expanding the pool of international customers.

The second edition of Italian Design Day in London will close with a conference on “The Beauty of Sustainability”, featuring the architect Massimo Iosa Ghini, to be held on 7 March at the Italian Cultural institute in London .
