Frieze – A week dedicated to women in art

“Women in art” at the Italian Cultural Institute and the Embassy of Italy

Last week London hosted the Frieze Art Fair and Frieze Masters, a festival in which 160 world-renowned galleries and over 1,000 contemporary artists participated, many of them Italian.

Coinciding with the Frieze festival, the Embassy of Italy launched its first internship focusing on the conservation of some of the artworks in its collection, carried out by the restorers Matilde Kratter and Mariana Salvary, coordinated by Maria Ludmila Pustka, with the collaboration of Stefania Negro. The team, made up entirely of women, undertook a detailed study of the current state of conservation of the works and drew up a maintenance programme. They also carried out conservation work on a painting by Leonardo da Bassano.

The Italian Cultural Institute, meanwhile, hosted a three-part exhibition and three round-table discussions with the artists Giosetta Fioroni, Bea Bonafini, Rebecca Salter, Serena Vestrucci and Michela de Mattei. The series concluded with a conversation between Francesca Baldassarri and Letizia Treves of the National Gallery on Artemisia Gentileschi, a 17th-century painter who worked in Florence, Rome, Naples and London and who was widely regarded as being well ahead of her times. The event celebrated the National Gallery’s recent acquisition of a painting portraying Gentileschi as Saint Catherine.
