Round Table - Sources of Instability in the South and NATO

Round Table - Sources of Instability in the South and NATO

The challenges to the stability of the Mediterranean and the role of NATO were the central themes of a round table entitled "Sources of Instability in the South and NATO", hosted today, Friday, November 22nd, at the Italian Embassy in London. The debate was promoted by the Embassy in collaboration with the Foreign Office and the British Ministry of Defence and is part of the bilateral strategic dialogue launched last March by the Secretaries General of the two Ministries.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for reflection in view of the meeting that NATO leaders will have in London on 3rd and 4th December, on the occasion of the organisation's 70th anniversary. The main international security experts from the two governments and the major research institutes in the United Kingdom, as well as representatives of the private sector and the embassies of the NATO countries, met to discuss the subject.

A strong message emerged about the importance of the stability of the south for the collective security of the Alliance and the importance of a truly "360-degree" view of the NATO modernisation process. "A strong Italy-UK partnership on defence and foreign policy is a great resource for the future of the Alliance," said Ambassador Trombetta.
