The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has sent the following message to Her Majesty Elizabeth II following the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh:

Having heard the news of the passing away of his royal highness the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, I would like to offer Your Majesty, the Royal Family and all citizens of the United Kingdom the most sincere condolences of the Italian Republic as well as my own.

In a multitude of people all over the world the memory remains alive of a figure who for over seventy years offered, with exemplary dedication, his service to the crown and to the United Kingdom, accompanying the progress of his country with an open, innovative spirit.

On his visits to Italy, Prince Philip always showed sincere friendship towards the Italian people, who retain a grateful memory of his deep admiration for the artistic and cultural heritage of the belpaese.

Please accept, Your Majesty, my sincere condolences and the expression of my personal consideration.
