L’Inferno più bello – Dante illustrated by Botticelli

L’Inferno più bello – Dante illustrated by Botticelli

To conclude the celebrations marking 700 years since Dante’s death, Ambassador Raffaele Trombetta will open the doors of the Italian Embassy for a very special event.

L’Inferno più belloDante illustrated by Botticelli will be the occasion to present the latest “Dante Project” by the Polonsky Foundation, in a journey through time in search of the earliest copies of the Divine Comedy and its owners, through a census of all the copies still in existence, to reveal who the first readers of Dante were and how they annotated their books.

For the first time ever in London it will be possible to admire a decorated copy of the first edition of the Divine Comedy, printed in 1481 in Florence, with 20 incisions based on designs by Sandro Botticelli.

Two videos will also be shown, taking us into the world of Dante: in the first video, Jon Snow and Zeinab Badawi will be voicing the Divine Comedy canti that inspired Botticelli for his designs; in the second one, we’ll discover the first readers of the Divine Comedy, finding out who they were and what they wrote on their books, from family recipes to accounts.
