XX Week of the Italian Language in the World

Today is the first day of the Week of the Italian Language in the World 2020. This year the week runs from 19 to 25 October and the theme is “Italian in words and pictures: graffiti, illustrations and comic strips”.

The events and activities organised by Italian embassies, consulates and cultural institutions around the world can be followed on digital platforms with the hastag #SLIM2020 and the handles @ItalyinUK @IIClondra and @IICedimburgo. They will focus on forms of expression that showcase the Italian language through images, particularly the comic strip, the graphic novel and publications for children and teens.

The Italian Cultural Institute in London will be presenting one of the main projects of the week: Andrea Camilleri’s story The Devil’s Smell (L’Odore del Diavolo) into a comic strip. The project brought together 15 renowned international comic artists, who collaratively illustrated the story under the direction of Massimo Fenati. The resulting book was published in both Italian and English and will be presented during an online event (more information here).

Two other initiatives of particular interest are a book on the Week of Italian Language in the World 2020 published by the Accademia della Crusca, the Italian language academy, and a project by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism entitled “Fumetti nei Musei” (“Comics in museums”), consisting of 51 comics for young people drawn by the most famous Italian comic artists to ilustrate the contemporary aspects of Italian museums.

The Week of the Italian Language in the World, now in its 20th year, is organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, through the diplomatic and consular network and cultural institutes, together with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry for Universities and Research, with the participation of the Accademia della Crusca, the Dante Alighieri Society and the government of the Swiss Confederation.
