Raphael then and now

Launch of Claudia La Malfa’s Raphael and Antiquity (Reaktion 2020)

The author was in conversation with historian Ben Thomas and award-winning student Kostas Gravanis

Claudia La Malfa’s recent book Raphael and the Antique (Reaktion, 2019) takes us on a masterful journey through Raphael’s approach to antiquity.

‘Raphael’s compositions were highly appreciated for his mastery of representing the real world within the sphere of the ideal’ writes La Malfa. Raphael’s ‘greatness rested in the sublime synthesis of the naturalistic representation of mankind and the perfect proportions of the forms of classical art.’

Claudia La Malfa
teaches art history at Loyola University Chicago and Kent University in Rome. She is the author of several books and articles on Raphael, Botticelli, Filippino Lippi, Andrea Sansovino and Pinturicchio. La Malfa’s most recent book is Raffaello. La rivoluzione dell’antico (Rizzoli, 2020)

Ben Thomas is reader in art history at the University of Kent at Canterbury. In 2018 he co-curated the award-winning Raphael Drawings exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

Kostas Gravanis is an award-winning student at the University of Kent completing a PhD on imagery in the Vatican Raphael’s rooms.
