Since 2 April 2025, visitors from 85 nationalities, including those of the European Union (and therefore Italy), who do not require a visa, must hold an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to travel legally to the United Kingdom.

During the initial introduction phase, the ETA requirement was not strictly enforced, allowing visitors time to comply with the new rule. However, starting from 25 February 2026, possession of an ETA will be strictly mandatory.

Anyone wishing to enter the United Kingdom will therefore need a digital permit, either via ETA or eVisa, and carriers will check documents prior to departure.

The ETA can be applied for online by clicking this link. Further information is available on the website of the Consulate General of Italy in London.
