Ambassador Fabio Cassese<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fabio Cassese has been Ambassador of Italy to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organisation \u2013 IMO since April 2026.<\/p>\n

Born in Naples on 22 July 1961, he graduated in Law from the University of Naples and joined the diplomatic service in 1989.<\/p>\n

After an initial assignment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Directorate General for Human Resources, in 1994 he took up duties as Vice Consul, and subsequently as Consul, at the Italian Consulate in Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n

In 1998, he was posted to the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations in New York, where for four years he followed economic, development and humanitarian issues in the General Assembly and ECOSOC, as well as the UN Funds and Programmes (UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNIFEM).<\/p>\n

Upon returning to the Ministry, he was assigned to the Directorate General for Human Resources, where he first served as Head of the Recruitment Office and later as Head of the Legal Office.<\/p>\n

In 2005, he was posted to the Permanent Mission of Italy to the OECD in Paris as First Counsellor, where he followed, among other matters, development cooperation issues as Italy\u2019s delegate to the DAC and the MENA programmes. During the same period, he also served as Italy\u2019s delegate to the European Space Agency.<\/p>\n

In 2009, he moved to the Permanent Mission of Italy to the European Union in Brussels, where he initially dealt with justice, home affairs, and immigration, and subsequently with infringement procedures and State aid.<\/p>\n

Back in Rome, from 2012 to 2016 he served as Deputy Director General for Development Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In this capacity, he contributed to the definition of cooperation policies and strategies, coordinated bilateral and multilateral initiatives, and oversaw their implementation, with particular reference to priority countries in Africa and the Middle East, undertaking numerous field missions.<\/p>\n

In 2016, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n

In 2017, he coordinated several promotional initiatives, including the regional programme \u201cItaly, Culture, Mediterranean\u201d at the Directorate General for the Promotion of the Country System.<\/p>\n

In July 2018, he was appointed Ambassador of Italy to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.<\/p>\n

In March 2022 he took up his duties as Director General for Development Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.<\/p>\n

In October 2022, he was appointed Diplomatic Adviser to the President of the Republic.<\/p>\n

In 2024, he was promoted to the rank of Ambassador, and in January 2026 the Council of Minsters appointed him as Ambassador of Italy to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n

He is a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and among his foreign honours he has received are:<\/p>\n
