﻿{"id":6341,"date":"2025-05-16T13:55:42","date_gmt":"2025-05-16T11:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amblondra.esteri.it\/?p=6341"},"modified":"2026-02-17T16:16:57","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T15:16:57","slug":"the-power-of-vaccination-from-discovery-to-global-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amblondra.esteri.it\/en\/news\/dall_ambasciata\/2025\/05\/the-power-of-vaccination-from-discovery-to-global-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"The Power of Vaccination: from Discovery to Global Impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"63\" data-end=\"247\"><strong data-start=\"63\" data-end=\"87\">London \u2013 16 May 2025<\/strong> \u2013 As part of its science diplomacy activities, the Embassy of Italy in London hosted the event <strong data-start=\"183\" data-end=\"247\">\u201cThe Power of Vaccination: from Discovery to Global Impact.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"249\" data-end=\"589\">The panel, organised in collaboration with the <strong data-start=\"296\" data-end=\"351\">Association of Italian Scientists in the UK (AISUK)<\/strong>, featured two leading experts in vaccine research: <strong data-start=\"403\" data-end=\"431\">Professor Andrew Pollard<\/strong>, Director of the Oxford Vaccine Group at the University of Oxford, and <strong data-start=\"503\" data-end=\"534\">Professor Mariagrazia Pizza<\/strong>, Professor of Microbiology at Imperial College London.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"591\" data-end=\"925\">The event opened with welcoming remarks by the Deputy Head of Mission, Minister Plenipotentiary <strong data-start=\"687\" data-end=\"706\">Riccardo Smimmo<\/strong>, who highlighted the Embassy\u2019s attention to the large and dynamic community of Italian academics and researchers in the United Kingdom, whose contribution to scientific progress is widely recognised across the country.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"927\" data-end=\"1432\">Professor Andrew Pollard then presented data illustrating the crucial impact that the introduction of mass childhood vaccination in the United Kingdom\u2014as a public health policy measure\u2014has had in bringing about the near disappearance of diseases that in previous centuries routinely caused the death of a large proportion of the population under the age of 15. He also warned that some of these illnesses are now worryingly re-emerging due to the spread of scientifically unfounded anti-vaccination views.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1434\" data-end=\"1917\">Finally, Professor Mariagrazia Pizza shared with the audience her extensive experience as Director of bacterial vaccine projects that have successfully led to two vaccines reaching the market.
