On 23 and 24 September, Ambassador Fabio Cassese visited the East Midlands and South Yorkshire to promote growth diplomacy and the investments made by Italian business in the UK.<\/p>\n
The mission began in Alfreton, Derbyshire, with a visit to Ferrero. This is the productive heart of Thorntons, a historic British chocolate brand which was acquired by the Italian group in 2015. Thanks to Ferrero’s investments, the production facility has become a top-level production and research centre.<\/p>\n
In Sheffield, the Ambassador visited the new headquarters of Danieli at the Advanced Manufacturing Park. The company, which has had a presence in the UK for over 25 years, today has cutting-edge laboratories and a logistics centre with which it contributes to the British iron and steel industry and its transition to zero emissions.<\/p>\n
At the historic Cutlers’ Hall, a meeting with representatives of Sheffield’s industrial sector and the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire confirmed the deep bond between Italian industry and the British city famous for steel.<\/p>\n
The second day was dedicated to a visit to the Marcegaglia plant in Sheffield, which produces stainless steel from recycled scrap and has installed a new high-tech electric arc furnace that reduces emissions and improves productive capacity as well as generating employment. This is the concrete result of the announcement made in 2024 on the occasion of a meeting between the Italian and British Prime Ministers at the time, Giorgia Meloni and Keir Starmer.<\/p>\n
The mission concluded with a meeting with the Mayor of South Yorkshire, Oliver Coppard, to strengthen collaboration between Italy and the local region on investment, industry and innovation.<\/p>\n
“Growth diplomacy means accompanying our businesses wherever they invest and innovate,” said Ambassador Cassess. “Ferrero, Danieli and Marcegaglia demonstrate that Italian industrial excellence is at home in a demanding market such as the UK’s. Mayor Coppard and I share the objective of creating new opportunities for collaboration between our territories, starting from advanced manufacture and innovation.”<\/p>\n
This is a presence that generates value for both ides. In the UK Italian businesses create work, skills and growth. For Italy, they are a lever for competitiveness and international projections: they strengthen the position of our industrial groups in one of the biggest European markets; they support the export of Italian technologies, machinery and know-how; and they have an impact on the production chains.<\/p>\n
