The conference included a joint event with <strong>Italy4Innovation<\/strong>, a series of events launched last year by the <strong>Embassy of Italy in London<\/strong> in collaboration with the <strong>Italian Trade Agency<\/strong> to promote a more structured relationship between the British and Italian innovation sectors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over <strong>30 innovative Italian companies<\/strong> were represented at the conference, together with <strong>incubators<\/strong>, <strong>accelerators<\/strong> and various institutions, which opened with a reception at the Italian ambassadorial residence. The <strong>ambassador<\/strong>, <strong>Raffaele Trombetta<\/strong>, gave an opening address, in which he highlighted the numerous economic-diplomacy initiatives carried out by the embassy to promote UK-based Italian businesses, particularly in the field of <strong>new technologies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Pierantonio Macola<\/strong>, the <strong>chairman of SMAU<\/strong>, explained that SMAU events are the largest Italian forum for innovation in business and public administration. He said that the events increasingly focus beyond Italy\u2019s borders, with the aim of facilitating the internationalisation of Italian technological and innovative businesses. <strong>Marco Bellezza<\/strong>, <strong>counsellor to vice prime minister Luigi Di Maio on legal matters and digital innovation<\/strong>, gave an overview of the Italian government\u2019s recent initiatives to support start-ups and innovation, including a <strong>national innovation fund<\/strong>, simplified procedures for setting up and winding down innovative start-ups, tax breaks for those who invest in innovative start-ups and venture-capital funds (including individual savings plans), funds for artificial intelligence, and blockchain technology.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second day of the conference, held at the <strong>Old Truman Brewery<\/strong>, comprised six discussion panels, on <strong>Open Innovation<\/strong>; <strong>Food Revolution<\/strong>; <strong>Fintech<\/strong>; <strong>Artificial Intelligence<\/strong> and <strong>Smart Manufacturing<\/strong>; <strong>Smart Communities<\/strong> and the accelerator <strong>iStarter<\/strong>, as well as <strong>networking sessions<\/strong> and pitches by the participating start-ups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first panel discussion also served as an Italy4Innovation event and was opened by <strong>Massimo Carnelos<\/strong>, the embassy\u2019s economic counsellor. The discussion focused on open innovation, the umbrella theme of this year\u2019s SMAU conference. The open-innovation model is increasingly embraced by large companies, which establish collaborations with external businesses, mainly start-ups, to fulfil their needs for innovation and growth.
