The fundraising drive in the UK concludes with a gala dinner at the ambassadorial residence hosted by the Ambassador and Mrs Terracciano.

A charity dinner was held yesterday evening at the residence of the Italian embassy in London, hosted by the Ambassador, Pasquale Terracciano, and his wife Karen. The event marked the conclusion of an intense campaign to raise funds to rebuild the areas hardest hit by the recent earthquakes in central Italy. The campaign aimed to raise €1m, a target that was reached and exceeded.

The guests of honour were the actor Colin Firth and his wife, Livia, who both have close links with the regions affected by the earthquakes. The pianist Giovanni Guidi, who has performed at numerous festivals, including the Umbria Jazz Festival, was also present, sponsored by the Umbria regional authorities. He opened the event with a short recital, highlighting just one of the many talents that central Italy nurtures.

The most significant donations to the fundraising effort were made by the British Red Cross — whose patron, HRH Queen Elizabeth, made a personal contribution — and a number of executives of the investment bank Goldman Sachs. There were also generous donations from Babcock International Group, Barclays, British American Tobacco, Green Network, Hakuna Matata Charity, Investindustrial Advisors, King Digital Entertainment, Loockheed Martin, Edoardo Mercadante, Rolls Royce, Virgin Group and Westfield.

The dinner was prepared by the embassy chef, Danilo Cortellini, a finalist in the television programme Masterchef Professionals UK 2015.
