London – 23 January 2025 – As part of its scientific diplomacy activities, the Embassy of Italy in London, in collaboration with the Italian Medical Society of Great Britain, hosted the event Healing the DNA: the New Frontiers of Medicine, dedicated to the latest innovations in the field of gene therapy and advanced therapies.
The meeting, moderated by Prof. Luigi Gnudi (King’s College London), brought together leading international experts. Prof. Alessandro Aiuti (San Raffaele Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy) illustrated the revolutionary role of gene therapy in the treatment of rare genetic diseases. Prof. Claire Roddie (University College London) explored the development of personalized cell therapies, the so-called “living drugs,” for the treatment of certain cancers. Finally, Prof. Claire Booth (Great Ormond Street Hospital and UCL) addressed the issue of accessibility to gene therapy, highlighting the challenges involved in making it concretely available to patients.
The initiative provided the public with a clear overview of the potential of genetic medicine and underscored the importance of international scientific cooperation for the advancement of biomedical research.
