London, 1 July 2026 – The Ambassador’s Residence hosted the event Space Exploration: Challenges and Opportunities for Europe, dedicated to the future of international – and particularly European – space exploration, while highlighting Italy’s standing as a leading ecosystem for talent, scientific excellence and innovation in the space sector.

The event was organised by the Embassy’s Scientific Office as part of the 9th Italian Research Day in the World, in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Association of Italian Scientists in the UK (AISUK). It featured ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti as the guest of honour.

In his opening remarks, the Ambassador of Italy to the United Kingdom, Fabio Cassese, recalled Italy’s longstanding commitment to ESA, reflected over the years in its support for numerous successful initiatives through both financial contributions and the participation of highly qualified scientists, engineers and other professionals.

At a time of renewed global competition in space exploration among the world’s leading economies, the Ambassador stressed that Europe’s ability to remain at the forefront will depend on close cooperation among the national authorities and agencies responsible for space activities across the continent.

Samantha Cristoforetti’s keynote address focused on the main challenges and opportunities facing European space exploration, with particular emphasis on Europe’s technological and scientific contribution to major international programmes, foremost among them Artemis.

The astronaut also noted that, despite Europe’s world-class industrial capabilities, the continent still lacks independent human spaceflight access. She highlighted the importance of initiatives such as ESA’s LEO Cargo Return Service programme in strengthening Europe’s strategic capabilities over the long term.

During the lively question-and-answer session that concluded the event, Cristoforetti reaffirmed that space exploration represents not only a scientific and technological investment, but also a strategic geopolitical asset that will play an increasingly important role in strengthening Europe’s position on the international stage.
