Cessazione della validità della carta d’identità cartacea per l’espatrio dal 3 agosto

CIE

From 3 August 2026 the paper version of Italian identity cards (Carta d’Identità Cartacea, CIC) will no longer be valid for international travel, irrespective of the expiry date indicated on them.

Legislative Decree no. 108 of 26/06/2026 introduced the following amendments:

  • Paper identity cards that have not yet expired will still be accepted as a form of identification by the Italian public administration and bodies that provide public services, including consulates;
  • In emergencies, Italian municipalities (comuni) can issue a temporary identity document for international travel. This document is valid for a maximum of 6 months and cannot be renewed. It may not be accepted outside Italy (see entry requirements on the Viaggiare Sicuri website.

Contact your nearest consulate to find out how to obtain the new Electronic Identity Card (Carta d’Identità Elettronica, CIE). Special appointments are available for those who do not have any other documents.

Italians residing abroad (registered with AIRE) are also able to request the Electronic Identity Card at any Italian municipality (comune), as specified in Law no. 11 of 19/01/2026. Remember to have your tax code (codice fiscale) with you.
