Ambassador Pasquale Terracciano spoke at the 29th Session of the International Maritime Organization Assembly, which takes place from 23 November to 2 December, during which he underlined the importance of the IMO for Italy and the latter’s participation in the activities of the UN specialised agency.

Italy, an IMO Member since 1957, recognises the important role of the organisation in matters of maritime transportation and confirms its full availability to continue cooperating with the IMO towards contributing to improve international laws which regulate the merchant marine sector, to increase levels of navigation safety and the safeguard of human lives, while also keeping in mind the sector’s environmental protection responsibilities, including reducing CO2 emissions. This is particularly important, especially in light of the upcoming Paris COP21 Conference on climate change.

Italy’s important role in marine Search and Rescue operations was also highlighted, considering the high numbers of migrants crossing the Mediterranean.
