Roberta Cremoncini, director of the Estorick Collection, is awarded knighthood of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic

Roberta Cremoncini, the director and curator of the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, received the decoration of Cavaliere dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana (Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic) yesterday. The decoration was presented to her by Pasquale Terracciano, the Italian ambassador to the UK, in the name of Sergio Mattarella, the Italian president.

Ms Cremoncini began her career managing the London office of Viart, an American art consultancy firm, before working on a freelance basis for a number of London art galleries, carrying out research on artwork and preparing exhibitions. In 1997 she joined the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian art as curator and became director of the collection in 2001. During her time at the Estorick she has curated numerous exhibitions and has written texts and essays for a range of catalogues, including Giorgio Morandi: the Collector’s Eye.

She has published numerous articles and essays in magazines and catalogues. She has spoken at conferences and lectures in Italy and the UK, including at the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery in London. She has been part of the scientific committee of many exhibitions and has curated exhibitions held in Italy on Futurism and 20th-century art. She is a frequent radio and television guest on programmes in both Italy and the UK and makes a significant contribution to the promotion of Italian culture in the UK.

Ms Cremoncini’s work has ensured that the works, most of them by futurist artists, collected by Eric and Salomé Estorick in the 1950s have been protected, promoted and made accessible to the public. The decoration awarded to Ms Cremoncini recognises her commitment and passion and her dedication to the promotion of Italian art and culture outside Italy.
