Presidente Prodi and Ambassador Terracciano in Cambridge for Keith Sykes Italian Studies Lecture

On Monday 19 June the Italian ambassador to the UK, Pasquale Terracciano, visited Pembroke College, University of Cambridge, for the annual Keith Sykes Italian Studies Lecture organised by the Italian studies department of the college.

The event was opened by Romano Prodi, former prime minister of Italy and president of the European Commission, who gave a speech focusing on the future of Europe, a central theme in this year’s lecture. This was followed by a panel discussion between Prodi; Lord Smith of Finsbury, master of Pembroke College and formerly a cabinet minister under Tony Blair; and Christopher Hill, emeritus professor of international relations at the University of Cambridge.

In the afternoon a ceremony was held in the college’s Old Library, at which Professor Andrea Ferrari was awarded the decoration of Official of the Order of the Star of Italy by Ambassador Terracciano on behalf of the president of Italy. Ferrari, an international expert in nanotechnologies, holds a degree in nuclear engineering from Milan Polytechnic and a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Cambridge. The award recognises his contributions to scientific research which has led to significant advances in the field of nanotechnology, further boosting Italy’s reputation in the scientific community.

At the end of the day, the Ambassador held an informal meeting with a group of students from the university’s Italian department.
