EMA Candidature – Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Senator Benedetto Della Vedova in London

An event focusing on dynamic innovation in the field of life sciences and pharmaceuticals in Italy was held today at the Embassy of Italy in London. The event was opened by the ambassador, Pasquale Terracciano, who highlighted the importance of leaving nothing to chance in the move to consolidate this sector, which is already strong in Italy, and to boost its growth further.

The event was organised in collaboration with ICE, Italy’s institute for foreign trade, which supports the internationalisation and development of Italian SMEs and start-ups outside the country, and Intesa San Paolo, one of the largest Italian banking groups operating in the City, which was represented at the event by Marco Longo, the general manager of Intesa San Paolo London.

The Italian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Senator Benedetto Della Vedova, attended the event as part of his official visit to London. During his visit he attended a number of events, among them a meeting with the British MP Ben Bradshaw and a press conference with journalists from international newspapers and specialist life-sciences magazines. During these meetings Della Vedova highlighted the crucial role of Milan, the driving force of the Italian economy.

The calibre of Milan’s businesses will be showcased tomorrow, when ten innovative Milanese start-ups, selected by Intesa San Paolo and ICE, will present high-added-value products to potential investors in London as part of StartUp Initiative, a project run by the bank.

Milan, which accounted for a third of the national turnover in the sector of life-sciences and pharmaceuticals in 2015, is a strong candidate in the selection of a new location for the European Medicines Agency (EMA) headquarters. The city, a hub for scientific innovation, cutting-edge medical research and efficient infrastructure, offers an intelligent ecosystem with a focus on sustainability and inclusiveness. In addition, the immediate availability of the Pirelli Building, an architectural masterpiece and the symbol of the city’s dynamism and energy, will ensure operational continuity during the transition period.
