“MODIGLIANI” Exhibition, TATE MODERN

The Modigliani exhibition, the most comprehensive retrospective ever held in the UK on one of the greatest Italian artists of the 20th century, opened at the Tate Modern in London on 21 November, attended by Ambassador Terracciano.

The exhibition, co-curated by Simonetta Fraquelli, focuses on the British period of the Livornese painter Amedeo Modigliani and his relationship with the poet and writer Beatrice Hastings, who is presented not only as a muse but also as an important cultural figure of the time. The exhibition opens with some of Modigliani’s best known female nudes and moves on to a series of heads, sculpted before the First World War, inspired by artists such as Brâncuşi and Epstein, before concluding with some of his most famous portraits, of figures such as Léopold Zborowski, a trader and close friend of the artist, and Jeanne Hébuterne, his partner and one of the most important women in his life.

The exhibition, curated by Nancy Ireson, includes a virtual-reality experience, which allows visitors to immerse themselves in the world of the artist.

The exhibition is supported by the Embassy of Italy, and the opening was attended by the ambassador, Pasquale Terracciano. He spoke of Modigliani as brilliant, enigmatic and controversial, saying that he was extremely honoured at the Tate Modern’s decision to dedicate an entire retrospective to an Italian artist, the second time it had done so. (Beyond Painting. Burri Fontana Manzoni was held in 2005.) He said that such initiatives make a considerable contribution to bringing great Italian art to a wide international audience.

The Italian Cultural Institute, institutional partner of the exhibition, will be holding a series of parallel events and talks on Modigliani.
