Ambassador Raffaele Trombetta presents his letters of credence to HM The Queen

Raffaele Trombetta, the Italian ambassador to the UK, today presented his letters of credence to HM Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace. He is now officially recognised by Her Majesty’s government as the representative of Italy to St James’s Court.

Ambassador Trombetta was born in 1960 and obtained a degree in political sciences from the University of Naples and a master’s in European Studies from the London School of Economics. He began his diplomatic career in 1985, with foreign postings including Bogotá, Brussels and Beijing, in the last of which he was deputy head of mission from 2002 to 2006. This is his second posting to London after serving as consul from December 1990 to January 1995. In 2008 he was appointed deputy director general for Asia, Australasia, the Pacific and the Antarctic and subsequently served as deputy director general for the EU and central director for European integration. From 2013 to 2016 he served as ambassador to Brazil and in 2016 he became head of cabinet of the then-minister of foreign affairs, Paolo Gentiloni. He was G7 and G20 sherpa for the prime minister last year.
