The Vespucci tall ship of the Italian Navy in Portsmouth harbour until 27 August
This morning the training ship Amerigo Vespucci has arrived in the port of Portsmouth, where it will be moored until 27 August. This is the fifth leg of the 2018 training tour, during which cadets from the Italian Navy’s Livorno Academy learn nautical skills while at sea. Their tour this year also takes place in the Atlantic Ocean and Northern Europe.
Ambassador Raffaele Trombetta will visit the vessel this morning, meeting the squadron’s commander-in-chief, Admiral Donato Marzano, and the ship’s commander, Sea Captain Roberto Recchia, as well as the crew and cadets.
The arrival of the Vespucci in the UK highlights the valuable role played by our seawomen and seamen and is of particular significance at a time when Genoa, a city that is emblematic of Italy’s close relationship with the sea, has so recently been struck by tragedy. The ship’s arrival is also an exciting opportunity for locals to visit it. It will be open to the public on Sunday 26 August between 1pm and 4pm.
