Barbara Serra receives knighthood of the Order of the Star of Italy

The journalist Barbara Serra was made a knight of the Order of the Star of Italy (Cavaliere della Stella d’Italia) yesterday, in recognition of her work promoting British-Italian relations. The decoration was presented by the ambassador of Italy to the UK, Raffaele Trombetta, in the name of the Italian president.

Serra – the only Italian anchor at Al Jazeera – has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the conditions of minorities and to give a more complete picture of delicate, often controversial subjects such as immigration, terrorism and the conditions of women. In over two decades working in Italy, the UK, the US and the Middle East, she has played an important role in promoting the international image of Italy.

In a political context fraught with uncertainty and rapid changes, professionals like Serra have a fundamental role in ensuring that bridges rather than walls are built between nations and cultures.
