Spatialism and its legacy, with Opera Gallery London

The Embassy hosts Spaziale!, a discussion and exhibition to celebrate one of the greatest Italian artistic movements of the 20th century, in partnership with Opera Gallery London

Spaziale! the event held yesterday at the Embassy of Italy in London, in partnership with Opera Gallery London, celebrated the spatialist movement and its legacy in the panorama of contemporary art.

The ambassador, Raffaele Trombetta, introduced the speakers and the chairman of the gallery, Gilles Dyan. He explained that this was one of the many cultural and artistic events that the embassy holds on a regular basis, many of which focus examine the links between art and business, promoting the economic and reputational impact of the artistic sector.

He explained that spatialism was a major movement in post-war Italian art, and that it introduced the innovative concept of three-dimensional space in painting.

The speakers, Giovanni Gasparini, director of the MSc in art, law and business at Christie’s Education London, and Giovanna Nicoletti, a curator and art critic, moderated by Federica Beretta, director of Opera Gallery London, discussed spatialism’s revolutionary approach and the growing success of the movement in recent decades, particularly in the UK. Nicoletti described the journey that led Lucio Fontana to develop the new language of spatialism, while Gasparini spoke about the dynamics of the art market and explored why spatialist works are so highly sought after by international collectors. The discussion closed with a Q&A session.

The exhibition Spaziale! will be held at the Opera Gallery and will feature some of the most influential spatialist artists, including Lucio Fontana, Turi Simeti, Agostino Bonalumi and Enrico Castellani.

Nine spatialist works from the gallery’s collection, by Lucio Fontana, Agostino Bonalumi, Enrico Castellani, Turi Simeti and Pino Manos, were on display, and Manos himself was present at the event as guest of honour.

The exhibition runs at Opera Gallery until 31 March.
