Finance Minister’s agenda: opening of the Annual Meeting of the EBRD, town meeting at Bloomberg on the Italian economy and several media interviews.

Finance Minister Pier Carlo Padoan was in London to attend the “Annual Meeting and Business Forum 2016” at the EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development) on 10-11 May.

His participation in the EBRD events began with “A Tale of two Finance Ministers”, a rich and sharp discussion together with the former Polish Finance Minister Leszek Balcerowicz, in an extensive dialogue during which they discussed the past and present economic challenges of the European Union. The Minister then took part in the EBRD Board of Governors meetings and the election of the its new President.

Minister Padoan was also interviewed by several media outlets and participated in a panel meeting at Bloomberg, moderated by Francine Lacqua, which was attended mostly by investors and the specialised press. Among the themes that were discussed: the state of reforms in the banking sector, the recent introduction of the bank rescue fund ‘Atlante’, the reforms of the justice sector and measures to stimulate employment. Minister Padoan concluded by emphasising, “Italy is back. The figures are encouraging.” This message was later reaffirmed in a series of interviews on ITV News and Channel 4.

Minister Padoan also addressed the ‘Brexit’ issue, which he defined as one of the potential factors of instability in the world economy. He added that if the UK were to leave the EU it could “profoundly undermine” the European integration process.
