London – Italian Athletics Federation, Mercato Metropolitano and Feedback Global band together to fight food waste

At the end of the 2017 World Athletics Championships, which took place in London from 3 to 13 August, the Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL), drew up an agreement with Feedback, a British NGO that fights against food waste, arranging to donate leftover food from Casa Atletica Italiana, the space that hosted the Italian team. The initiative was made possible by the Embassy of Italy in London and Mercato Metropolitano, a food market founded by Andrea Rasca in Elephant & Castle promoting non-industrial food, socialisation and urban regeneration.

Feedback received large quantities of pasta, conserve, meat, fresh fruit and vegetables and other Italian products, which were left over from the catering service in the Casa Atletica Italiana.

During the championships a number of public events highlighting Italian culinary excellence were hosted by Casa Atletica Italiana, with catering by chef Gianfranco Vissani. Some of the food left over at Casa Atletica Italiana will be sent to local charities and the rest will be used in initiatives raising awareness of food waste and serving surplus, including a Disco Soup organised by Feedback at Mercato Metropolitano, a major player in the fight against food waste.
