Mayor of Genoa Marco Bucci in London

Genoa roadshow comes to London to present strategic plans and investment opportunities

Marco Bucci, the mayor of Genoa, gave a presentation at the Embassy of Italy yesterday on recent infrastructure projects in his city. He was in London as the leader of a delegation representing the city of Genoa and the Liguria region, and the presentation was attended primarily by investors and representatives of international companies and organisations based in London.

The ambassador, Raffaele Trombetta, explained in his opening speech that Genoa has one of the largest and strategically most important ports in the Mediterranean and that investment in the region therefore has the potential to benefit Europe as a whole.

Genoa, a city whose history goes back thousands of years, is both a popular tourist destination and one corner of the Genoa-Milan-Turin industrial triangle. It has the second-highest investment figures in Italy, thanks to its port and recently proposed tax incentives.

The city has a strong technological sector, particularly in biomedical and mechanical research. The Erzelli GREAT Campus, currently under construction and due to be completed in 2021, will be the largest science and technology park in Italy. It will host the University of Genoa’s faculty of engineering, a hospital and the Italian Technological Institute, adding significantly to the numerous high-tech companies already based in the area.

In view of its strategic location, Genoa could also play a key role in the One Belt, One Road initiative, a new Silk Route connecting China and Europe.

The new Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, meanwhile, will introduce sustainable initiatives to improve transport links in Genoa, including connections between the airport, the city and the Erzelli GREAT Campus. The entire port area will be regenerated under the Levante Waterfront project by the internationally acclaimed architect Renzo Piano, paving the way for future development and providing services for local residents.

The ambassador and Mr Bucci both mentioned the historical trade and cultural links between Genoa and the UK, observing that both Genoa and England use the flag of St George.
