Italian Business Integrity Day (IBID)

To mark International Anticorruption Day, the Embassy of Italy in London hosted Italian Business Integrity Day (IBID) on Monday 9 December, the first time the event had been held in London.

The event, now in its third year, is part of a project launched by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the Transparency International Italy and some of the most important Italian companies operating abroad. It was co-organised by the Law Society of England and Wales and featured four companies: Acciai Speciali Terni, Falck Renewables, Rina SPA and Ferrovie dello Stato-Trenitalia.

The aim of the initiative was to present the experiences and best practices of organisational models and compliance programmes adopted by Italian businesses to prevent corruption and other illegal behaviour.

Through IBID, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs promotes the Italian private sector abroad, including its adherence to high ethical and legal standards.

The fight against corruption has a direct economic impact on businesses, in addition to its ethical and legal importance. By actively countering corruption and developing models of integrity and transparency, businesses can gain reputational and competitive advantage, both nationally and internationally. Italian businesses operating abroad can make a significant contribution to a new narrative of Italy by cultivating a culture of legality and sustainable corporate models and promoting a regulatory environment that ensures a level playing field among businesses, including in matters of anticorruption.

This third edition of IBID includes two other events, one on 16 December in Abu Dhabi, on the margins of the Conference of State Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption, and the other on 29 January 2020 in Berlin. The events testify to the synergy between the public and private sectors and civil society in the fight against corruption, following a multi-stakeholder method, and aim to retire Italian stereotypes and provide a concrete demonstration of a high-functioning system.
