Online lecture by CERN director

The 61st Cherwell Simon Memorial Lecture was held on 20 May 2021, organised by the University of Oxford’s Department of Physics in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy in the UK and the Association of Italian Scientists in Great Britain.

Professor Fabiola Giannotti, director of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), gave an overview of the Geneva-based organisation’s mission – the study of subatomic particles – and explained its crucial role in supporting international collaboration among over 18,000 scientists of over 110 nationalities.

The lecture was also an opportunity to look at the groundbreaking results of various research projects carried out at CERN and to explore the immense challenges yet to be confronted by physics, from the origins of the cosmos to the secrets of material and to life. Prof Giannotti also highlighted how important young people are in CERN’s activities.

The event was opened by Massimo Carnelos, counsellor for economic affairs and trade at the embassy, who conveyed the Ambassador’s greetings and expressed support for the initiative on behalf of the embassy and Italian scientists in the UK.  He highlighted the fruitful collaboration between British and Italian scientists, saying “science unites people”.
