Ambassador Lambertini hosted an event entitled “The New Frontier: National Security in the Age of Disinformation” on 4 September 2024, part of the UK-Italy Young Leaders Programme. Professor Michael Clarke (Visiting Professor of War Studies at King’s College London, formerly Directore General of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI)) moderated a conversation between Elisabeth Braw, Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center and author of Goodbye Globalization and The Defender’s Dilemma, and Gabriele Carrer, a journalist at Formiche, co-author of a study on disinformation for the a European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) and one of the ten young people selected in March 2024 by the British and Italian embassies to make up the first cohort of Young Leaders.
The event offered a vibrant, in-depth discussion on the risks of disinformation and its impact on the stability of governments and on trust in institutions, especially with regard to electoral participation, in a year in which an exceptional number of elections are being held around the world.
The event also highlighted the vital role of the Young Leaders Programme, which aims to create solid links between Italy and the UK and train a network of young leaders who are committed to tackling global challenges like disinformation, promoting critical thinking and fact-checking.
