On December 11, the Embassy of Italy in London celebrated the fourth edition of the National Space Day, opening its doors to the public to present Italian Space Design, a multimedia project created by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano. The curators of the project, Professors Annalisa Dominoni and Benedetto Quaquaro, among the leading experts in architecture and design, are in charge of the first international course on Space Design, Space4InspirACTion, supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) at the School of Design of the Politecnico di Milano.
The day was divided into three moments: at the Istituto Marangoni in London, Professors Dominoni and Quaquaro held a special lecture for students, dedicated to the fundamental Italian contribution to Space Design and to the innovative objects already created and currently in development.
The Embassy then opened its doors to everyone wishing to visit a special thematic exhibition: the public was guided through a path of twelve panels and multimedia contents that interacted with each other, telling the story of the use of everyday objects in the extreme environment of space.
After the installation visit, an interesting presentation followed, led by Professors Dominoni and Quaquaro. During this presentation, the two professors took the audience in the room on a real space exploration. Referring to the panels displayed in the exhibition, they demonstrated how, thanks to the excellence of Italian design, it is concretely possible to improve the quality of life and the performance of astronauts. They concluded by highlighting how the future of space tourism is no longer just a futuristic idea but a feasible project, thanks to the contributions of technology, science, and engineering.
