London, February 12 – The first in a series of debates dedicated to sustainable navigation was held at the Italian Embassy in London, aiming to promote innovative practices for the protection of oceans and the construction of a more sustainable future.

The event – organised by the Embassy’s Maritime Office and titled “Towards Sustainability: Greener Seas for a Better Tomorrow” – brought together prominent experts from academia, industry, and international organizations. The discussion focused on the challenges and opportunities within the maritime sector, with particular attention to the latest developments in sustainability.

In his opening speech, the Italian Ambassador to London highlighted the importance of reducing the environmental impact of navigation through innovative solutions. Key topics addressed included the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable ballast water management, and the fight against plastic pollution. The Ambassador also praised the work of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in developing a global strategy to reduce emissions in the sector.

“Today, more than ever, sustainability is not a choice but a necessity. Navigation must evolve to reduce its environmental impact by adopting innovative solutions and responsible practices,” declared Ambassador Inigo Lambertini. “Italy is proud to contribute to this global effort, working side by side with the International Maritime Organization to develop effective strategies for emission reduction and ocean protection. Only through collaboration between institutions, industry, and the scientific community can we build a greener, safer future for our seas and future generations,” the ambassador concluded.

Among the speakers, Professor Elda Belja from the International Maritime Law Institute of Malta and Professor Monica Canepa from the World Maritime University in Malmö shared their research on the role of alternative fuels, such as biomethane and hydrogen, and the importance of advanced technologies to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

The debate was moderated by Claudia De Meulemeester, a correspondent for the Financial Times, who guided the discussion on topics such as international regulations, industry best practices, and the importance of stakeholder collaboration to promote sustainability in the maritime sector.

The Italian Embassy reaffirms its leading role in supporting national and international commitments toward a greener future for our seas, fostering dialogue and cooperation among institutions, industry, and the scientific community. The event provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and strengthen the partnerships necessary to address the global challenges of the maritime sector.
