From the Recovery and Resilience Plan to the reform process and Horizon Europe: the three key challenges to be faced by the National Research Council and the Italian research system

2022 offers a great opportunity to transform the Italian National Council of Research (CNR) and make it ready to accompany the growth of societies of the future. Leveraging its field of excellence, CNR is committed to contribute to the challenges of key enabling technologies and is proposing itself as a national hub for biodiversity within the PNRR. At the same time, the Italian financial law for 2022 has released funds for one of the most ambitious CNR reform processes ever, calling for the widest participation of stakeholders and the international scientific community. Finally, the full-scale launch of the new Horizon Europe program developed under the European Union Common Research Area completes the number of unmissable opportunities. Faced with such a prospect, our ability to imagine and redesign the future of research in Italy, with vision and ambition, will play a key role in the success of the entire process.
